AUGUSTE EDOUART (FRENCH, 1788-1861; ACTIVE IN THE U.S. 1839-1849) CUT PAPER AND WATERCOLOR SILHOUETTE PORTRAIT OF SIR PETER LAURIE, DATED 1829, IN A DOUBLE-SIDED FRAME.
A full-length portrait of Sir Laurie holding his pocket watch in one hand and top hat in the other, the watercolor background a busy street scene with pedestrians, carriages, and Classical buildings, inscribed "59" at top (folio page number) and "Sir Peter Laurie Cheltenham 22nd August 1829" at bottom, the verso a watercolor of an interior having a large chair and writing table in front of a fireplace with other furniture and decorations. Sir Peter Laurie was elected Sheriff of London in 1823, Alderman in 1826, Lord Mayor of London 1832-33, and Master of the Saddlers Company 1833. In a double-sided bird's-eye maple frame with gilt liner. Frame, 18.5"h. 15"w.

  • Condition: Loss of veneer to front of frame approx. 1/4" x 1/2", minor foxing to paper. See photo of bottom of paper where there is a possible reduction to paper. (TD 1.7)
