AUGUSTE EDOUART (FRENCH, 1788-1861; ACTIVE IN THE U.S. 1839-1849) CUT PAPER FULL-LENGTH SILHOUETTE OF A MAN.
Nineteenth Century. Cut and paste silhouette of a man facing left, wearing a top hat, high-collared shirt, long overcoat, pants, and shoes, having a stencil signature reading "AUG.N EDOUART. Fecit 182?" at lower left, and an embossed watermark of the papermaker also at lower left. In a period, but
not original, wood frame with gilt liner, the verso with a machine-copy of the reverse of the paper, showing trade label of Edouart's Cheltenham studio. Frame, 13.75"h. 9.75"w. The figures taken in 1826 & 1827 are rare to find but easy to spot. The early shapes are 10 to 11 inches tall. In 1827 he
adopted "the military standard" where a grown man of ordinary height is about 7.5" tall, short men, women and young people are easily distinguished by the figure's overall height.
