American, 19th Century. Cut and woven paper, ink, and hair. The hand and hair laid over a paper note that reads: "This lock of hair I once did ware and now ill leave it in youre care. Keepe it as long as you have breath and we are it when I sleep in death. From your affectionate friend". Handwritten notation on the back, "Sara Askew sent this to John Gardner - Waterford, Conn.".
