Description:

FOLK ART TEMPERANCE-MOVEMENT CARVING OF CASKET.
American, late 19th - early 20th Century. Miniature, intricately-carved wooden casket with inked "At Rest" and "The Truth Inside". When opened two drunken figures with goblets standing on a barrel fall forward. Partial newspaper comic strip glued to the inside lid. 5"l.

Probably created as a visual reminder of the dangers of alcohol and as a tool for spreading the message of temperance. The use of wood and naive appeal are a reflection of the simplicity and purity of the temperance movement's ideals.
