Description:

TWO-SIDED TAVERN TRADE SIGN FOR "FALLS HOUSE" (PROBABLY SUGAR CREEK FALLS, TUSCARAWAS COUNTY, OHIO).
American, second half 19th Century. Pine. Applied outer moldings. Original black painted ground and gold leaf liner and lettering. "FALLS HOUSE, C. HAYNES. 1868" on a sanded surface. 41.5"h. 41"w. Ex Blandon Cherry (Paris, Kentucky), Joe Ley (Louisville, Kentucky). Cataloguer's note: A "Falls House" is well-documented as a stone tavern built in 1819 by Christian Deardorff, the founder of Dover, Ohio. The tavern was constructed on Sugar Creek Falls, located three miles north of Strasburg, Ohio on the stagecoach route from Dover to Wooster and was purportedly visited by three Presidents: William Henry Harrison, James Monroe and James Garfield. Falls House was razed in 1936 or 1937 as a part of the Muskingum Flood Control Project, when the structure was purchased by a Canton, Ohio businessman who planned to use the stone in the construction of his residence. According to the Brewster Sugar Creek Township Historical Society, "At the time of its razing, it was the oldest continuously operated tavern in the state, serving patrons for 115 years." See The Ohio Frontier Series, 1767-1847: Early Ohio Taverns, Tavern-sign, Stage-coach, Barge, Banner, Chair and Settee Painters by Rhea Mansfield Knittle (mentioned on page 14); The Daily Times, New Philadelphia, Ohio, May 16, 1936: "FAMOUS FALLS HOUSE SOLD; TO BE MOVED TO CANTON".
