RARE CARVED AND PAINTED ROOSTER, PROBABLY A POLITICAL SIGN.
American (Indiana), circa 1840. Carved and painted wood. Three-quarters full-bodied rooster with full tail and puffed chest standing on red, white, and blue over original gilding on base. Base with age splits and paint loss. 14.75"h. 12"w. Cataloguer's note: the use of the rooster as a symbol of the Democratic party originated in Greenfield, Indiana during the 1840 Presidential campaign. This rooster is made to mount on a wall and is conceivably connected.
